What Narrative?

Christology, Soteriology, Ecclesiology, Pnuematology, Eschatology, Anthropology, Hamartiology, Angelology…

These are words that I learned at seminary. I don’t like these words any more today than I did when I first heard them. I think they are ridiculous. These terms do nothing to introduce people to the story of God. This ridiculous list of “-ologies” is how traditional theology (systematic or not) is done.

Human beings are fundamentally people of stories. We want to know how we fit into the story of God. We want to know who God is, what He does, why He does what He does, and what He is like. Narrative theology tells us about God in a way that we as humans can relate to: in story.

Narrative theology also recognizes that the story of God is different and means different things to different cultures. The beauty of story/narrative is that everyone can relate to some narrative. The story of God is the ultimate narrative; it relates directly to any human being, regardless of tribe, tongue, or nation. “-ologies” do not.
